--- ☀ ---

Mateo Flores is the young prince of the Kingdom of the Sun, and is the only heir to the throne. He’s a kind, quiet young man, who rarely comes out of his shell. He’s almost always seen with his personal knight, The Knight of Radiant Sun, though this isn’t exactly by his choice. While he doesn’t take his royal duties very seriously, he shows a clear passion for the arcane arts, often skipping important meetings to practice spells.

Story

Mateo was born into the royal family of the Kingdom of the Sun, and would be the only child of Solis and Martiza. At a young age, he showed promising signs of a career in the arcane arts. At the age of five he was able to cast basic spells without the use of a wand. This resulted in his parents quickly enrolling him in private lessons focused on arcane arts. He spent his formative years engrossed in these lessons. Because these lessons were private and rarely left the castle grounds, his social development was stunted, and he relied on staff for companionship.
Both of his parents wanted the best for him, but couldn’t seem to agree on what “the best” truly meant. Solis, his father, always pushed him to study, to become the best of the best, because he knew his son was meant for greatness. Martiza, his mother, wanted him to socialize, to enjoy his youth while it was still there. These conflicting opinions led Mateo to have a troubled relationship with his father, and enjoy the company of his mother more.

Sadly, around the time he turned twelve, things would take a turn for his family. His mother, the queen, developed a deadly illness. Despite hiring the best doctors in the kingdom, the cause of the illness was unknown, and her body began to quickly degrade. Mateo spent a lot of time with his mother in the short year she lived after her initial signs of sickness. Her death deeply affected Mateo, and caused him to self isolate for extended periods of time.
In the aftermath of Martiza’s death, Solis sought out Mateo more. They began to repair their relationship, knowing that they were the only family they had.
As Mateo grew older, he took on more and more responsibilities, filling holes that his mother left in the political world. His father realized that, no matter what his son said, he would have a target on his back. As a result, he began the selection process of a personal knight for Mateo. In the end, the new Knight of Radiant Sun was chosen as his protector.

Now, Mateo continues his political duties and education in the arcane arts.

Relationships

King Solis

Despite the rocky relationship they once had, Mateo now looks up to his father and frequently goes to him for advice and comfort. He sees his father as a kind, loving man, who just wants the best for his family and his kingdom. The death of the queen is still a sore spot of conversation between him and his father, so they try to avoid discussing her passing.

Queen Martiza

Mateo’s mother was, and still is, the kindest, most thoughtful person he knows of. No relationship is perfect, but one could argue theirs was. Her death left deep emotional scars. Nearly all of his prayers ask for one simple thing: for just one conversation with her spirit.

The Knight of Radiant Sun

How close can you be with someone who took a vow of silence? Mateo really isn’t sure what to think of Radiant. Even though he’s only known him for a few months, Mateo is able to make out the knight’s mood through subtle movements and quirks. Despite his lack of words, he seems to be someone who cares about Mateo not only because it’s his job to care. Mateo just… isn’t sure what to make of his relationship with the knight. He does like him! Just… not exactly sure what else he thinks. At least he’s good at his job.

Andromeda Kimani

Andy is Mateo’s younger cousin, and the closest thing he has to a sibling. They see each other most often out of the current generation of royal heirs, and have grown close as a result. She’s one of the few people that sees the real Mateo, the passionate young boy who will go to any length to get others to smile. Mateo does his best to protect her.

The Knight of Shining Stars

Starshine is… a character to put it simply. Mateo sees her as a mentor and as an older sister figure, but he doesn’t know if that’s a good thing. Despite how crazy she can get at times, and how often she beats his knight to a pulp, she’s family to him.

Juliana Misyat

Julie has always interested Mateo, but not in the way most would think. He sees the quiet, docile girl she presents herself as, and he knows something about that appearance is a lie. He rarely sees her, but each time he does meet with her at a summit or official visit, she seems sadder.

Atlas Misyat

Mateo has always been a bit weirded out by Atlas. Similar to his sister, he knows that something about the persona Atlas projects isn’t true. Or, at least, isn’t entirely true. Not to mention, on the rare occasion they see each other, Atlas is a little too keen on making conversation with him. Maybe the Misyats are just… an odd bunch.
